Maintenance of highways is the main concern

Maintenance of roads, streets, pavements, verges and the Elmley Castle Recreation Ground

There is general satisfaction with the maintenance of roads, streets, pavements, verges and the Elmley Castle Recreation Ground. 77% of people rate the quality of maintenance as average or better. However, only 5% gave it top marks; many people identified the following specific issues;

  • Potholes in the highways;
  • The poor quality of New Road;
  • Drainage of water off highways.

Dog mess

Only 14% see dog mess as a significant problem, but 29 people cited Elmley Castle recreation ground as a worry in this regard, and almost as many mentioned the footpaths leading to the Primary School.

Road Safety

The majority – 59% – are concerned by danger spots. Chief amongst these are Besscap and the New Road junction in Elmley Castle, but general speeds along the lanes connecting the villages are also clearly a concern.

Litter and fly tipping

Whilst only 17% of respondents think litter and fly tipping is a significant problem, they tend to be those who live at the edges of the villages and are more aware of the extent of fly tipping into our roadside ditches. Almost all connecting roads were mentioned.

Public telephone boxes

Most people (86%) never use these phone boxes, but a small majority (51%) would be unhappy if they were removed.

Village Gateways

One method, recommended by the police, of emphasising to drivers that they are entering a 30mph zone, and to show some community pride, is to have “Village Gateways”. These can be highly elaborate but most use simple gates, or sometimes traditional walls.

Village Gateway

Only 27% supported this idea, with commentators expressing concern that they tend to look “too urban” or “out of place”. Those in favour were mainly keen for the ability of gateways to reduce traffic speeds.
